Weaving Strategy of the Week: Lessons from a Loose Thread

    Shares

Recently I wore one of my favourite crocheted tops to run errands.

While standing in line at the bank, a woman behind me whispered that a thread on my sleeve was unraveling.

I looked down and realised my top was literally coming undone.

As I left the bank I knew I needed help.

The banker suggested I go across the street to a needlepoint shop.

The ladies there took one look and said, “We’re not open yet, but you should try the alteration place around the corner.”

This referral chain took me to a little clothing repair shop run by a skilled seamstress.

When I walked in, the seamstress looked at my sleeve and said, “Oh, I can take care of that.”

She reached into her drawer, pulled out a crochet hook and asked, “Do you want me to finish it?”

I nodded and watched as she deftly crocheted the seam back together.

Within moments, the thread was secure and my top looked as good as new.

I asked, “How much do I owe you?”

Without hesitation she said, “Ten dollars.”

I happily paid her and thanked her for saving my top.

    Lessons from a Loose Thread

This simple experience is full of business lessons for therapists and wellness practitioners.

    • Build a referral network. Each person I met sent me to someone else. Without those referrals I would never have found the seamstress.
    • Speak in outcomes, not processes. The seamstress didn’t talk about her technique; she simply said she could fix it and asked if I wanted her to finish.
    • Price based on value, not time. She took only minutes but charged based on the value of the service.
    • Make it easy for people to refer you. Have materials and relationships so people can confidently send clients your way.
    • Always be ready to serve. The seamstress grabbed her hook and fixed it on the spot. Be prepared when opportunities arise.

Take a moment to ask yourself: do people in your network know what you do well enough to recommend you?
Are you talking about results instead of time?
Are you charging based on value rather than minutes?

Small moments like a loose thread can weave together powerful strategies for building a thriving practice.
Watch the video to see how I connect these threads and think about how you can apply them to your own business.
