The Power of Stillness: How Slowing Down Actually Grows Your Therapy Practice

    Shares

I know this sounds counterintuitive, especially coming from someone who coaches therapists on business growth. But one of the most important marketing strategies I can teach you has nothing to do with social media, websites, or advertising. It is about developing awareness through stillness.

In this installment of my Simplify Marketing Your Practice series, I wanted to address something that I see holding back even the most talented practitioners. They are so busy doing, doing, doing that they never stop to think about whether they are doing the right things. And that lack of awareness costs them clients, revenue, and fulfillment.

Why Busy Does Not Equal Productive

As therapists, we are trained to take action. See a client, solve a problem, move on to the next one. And that same action-oriented mindset carries over into how we run our businesses. We fill every hour with tasks. We say yes to every opportunity. We keep our heads down and grind, assuming that if we just work hard enough, the practice will grow.

But here is what I have learned after running my San Francisco wellness center for decades: the therapists who build the most successful practices are not the busiest ones. They are the most intentional ones. They take time to step back, evaluate what is working, and make deliberate choices about where to invest their energy.

What Awareness in Stillness Looks Like

I am not telling you to meditate for an hour every morning, though that would not hurt. What I am talking about is building regular moments of reflection into your week. Before you start marketing your practice, sit with these questions: Who are my best clients? What do they have in common? Where did they find me? What made them choose me over every other therapist they could have called?

These questions require stillness to answer honestly. When you are running from appointment to appointment, you never give yourself the space to see the patterns that are right in front of you. And those patterns hold the key to growing your practice with far less effort than you are currently spending.

    How This Changed My Practice

When I finally slowed down enough to pay attention, I realized that my most successful client relationships had a very specific profile. They were women dealing with chronic pain who had been dismissed or underserved by traditional healthcare. Once I saw that pattern clearly, I stopped trying to market to everyone and started speaking directly to that specific group of people.

That single insight, born from a moment of stillness and reflection, transformed my entire business. My marketing became clearer. My messaging became stronger. My referrals became more targeted. I wrote more about this shift in my article about standing out in your marketing, and it all started with getting quiet enough to see what was already there.

A Simple Practice You Can Start This Week

Block 30 minutes on your calendar this week. No phone. No computer. Just you, a notebook, and the honest question: what is actually working in my practice right now, and what am I doing out of habit that is not serving me anymore? You might be surprised by what comes up when you give yourself permission to be still.

Watch the full video above for more on this concept. And if you are ready to take a more intentional approach to growing your practice, I would love to help.
