Here is a question I want you to sit with for a moment: Are you trying to be better than every other therapist in your area, or are you trying to be different? Because those two strategies lead to completely different outcomes, and most therapists are chasing the wrong one.
I recorded this as part of my Simplify Marketing Your Practice series because I kept seeing the same pattern with the practitioners I coach. They spend all their energy trying to prove they are “better” than the competition, better credentials, better techniques, better equipment. And while those things matter, they are not what makes clients choose you.
When you compete on “better,” you are playing someone else’s game. You are comparing yourself to other therapists using the same metrics they use. More certifications. Longer experience. Fancier office. But here is what happens: your potential clients cannot tell the difference. To them, one massage therapist with 15 years of experience looks pretty much like another massage therapist with 12 years of experience.
Competing on “better” also puts you on a treadmill that never stops. There will always be someone with more credentials, more experience, or a bigger marketing budget. It is exhausting, and it keeps you focused on the wrong things.
When you position yourself as different, you step out of the comparison game entirely. You are no longer one of twenty massage therapists in your zip code. You are the only therapist who specializes in helping marathon runners recover from injuries. Or the only therapist who offers a results guarantee program for chronic pain. Or the only therapist who combines myofascial release with movement education in a structured six-week program.
Different means memorable. Different means referable. When someone asks your client, “Do you know a good massage therapist?” your client does not say, “Yeah, she is pretty good.” Instead, they say, “You have to see Irene. She does this specific thing that nobody else does, and it changed everything for me.” That is the power of being different. I have written about this idea of designing a precise private practice because it is the foundation of everything I teach.
Your “different” is not something you invent. It is something you discover. It already exists in the intersection of three things: what you are genuinely passionate about, what you are exceptionally skilled at, and what a specific group of people desperately needs.
Start by asking yourself these questions. What types of clients do I love working with? What conditions or challenges do I get the best results with? What do my happiest clients say about working with me that they would not say about other therapists? The answers to those questions will point you toward your unique position in the market.
For me, that journey led to specializing in chronic pain conditions for women, specifically migraines and fibromyalgia. It was not the broadest market, but it was the right market for me. And it transformed my practice in ways that trying to be the “best massage therapist in San Francisco” never could.
Once you know what makes you different, your marketing becomes infinitely easier. You stop writing generic website copy about “relaxation and stress relief” and start speaking directly to the people who need exactly what you offer. Your brochures and marketing materials become specific and compelling rather than vague and forgettable.
Your social media stops being a chore because you have a clear message to share. Your networking conversations become easy because you can articulate exactly who you help and how. And referrals start flowing because people remember you. Not because you are “better,” but because you are the only one who does what you do.
Watch the full video above where I break down this concept with specific examples and actionable steps you can take this week. And if you are ready to find your “different” and build your marketing around it, let’s talk. This is one of my favorite things to help therapists figure out.
